Hi again, my friend Kyoruka and I made a song! Before reading the rest of this I highly recommend listening to it!
The Newgrounds upload is here: https://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/1209275
Now it's time to get a tad bit personal. In case any of my regular audience doesn't know - I am transgender. Kyoruka and I both are and that's what we wanted to make our song about. You can refer to me with the pronouns they/them or she/her
Realizing that was.. a rough process to say the least.
The earliest I can remember feeling anything related to gender dysphoria (the feeling that many associate with being transgender) was when I was around 13-14 years old. I had snuck into my mom's closet and stole one of her dresses and secretly wore it for an entire day. Normally here you'd hear something along the lines of "As soon as I put it on, I realized that I was a magical girl the whole time" but unfortunately, self discovery is much more complex and convoluted than that. The community I was raised in in saw being transgender as a bad and unnatural thing. It was a perverse force seeking to destroy society. I'm sure there are people reading this who live in such environments, and to those people who do believe these things - I feel sorry for you.
I didn't actually allow myself to realize that my gender identity is different than the one I grew up with until I was 18 years old. I had to re-evaluate a lot of my core beliefs to come to that conclusion and it was incredibly difficult and frustrating but it was worth it. However that doesn't mean that it still isn't frustrating to exist as a transgender person. As the days go by, it seems like more and more people have something against us. Being from the US and seeing anti-trans and anti-lgbtq+ laws and policies getting brought up to no end is scary. It's difficult to keep an optimistic perspective on life when things like this happen, but if I've learned anything over the past few years is that no matter what transgender people will always exist. Whether they are out and proud or not, we are everywhere.
The song itself is a reflection of our struggles with being transgender and the hopes we have for our futures. If you're reading this and have listened to the song, thank you. It means a lot to us.
Trans rights are human rights. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Thanks for reading <3
